Sometimes, books find you by happenstance. I had long been hearing about Dostoyevsky from the literary world, and when I happened to see my brother reading White Nights, I knew I had to steal it. I paused my current read to finish White Nights and what an experience it turned out to be! 🤍
Right from the beginning, Dostoyevsky’s writing caught me off guard. The sentences race forward, almost as fast as the human mind itself. It reminded me of the question Yaksha asks Yudhishthira:
“What travels faster than the wind?”
And Yudhishthira answers,
“The mind.” 💭
You can literally feel that answer come alive in Dostoyevsky’s writing. The endless exclamations, the rush of thoughts, the sudden shifts in emotion. Reading it in that very tone was an absolute joy. It was a roller coaster of emotions, raw, relatable, and beautifully human. ❤️🩹
You might wonder whether the protagonist truly falls in love or finds, for a fleeting moment, an escape from his loneliness. I’ll leave that for you to discover. 🙌🏽 What stayed with me, though, was the sheer complexity of human emotions, how they change within split seconds, how contradictory they can be, and how real they feel.
We often get caught up in what a person does, forgetting to ask why. And perhaps that is what makes Dostoyevsky so fascinating! His ability to take us into the racing mind behind our actions, our contradictions, and our emotions. 🧠
✨ Dostoevsky is not just a read; he is an experience.
