During my postgraduate research at the University of Pennsylvania, I did an extensive study on the Israel-Palestine conflict and on civil society promoting peace. We as a team travelled to Israel, Palestine (West Bank) to study the on-ground situation and understand the conflict from different perspectives. Here is a piece not on the past of the... To all the Women that came before me.
We talk and work on women empowerment. We believe we are the strongest, probably the best generation advocating for equality and justice. Ever wondered, what was the role of women a 100 years ago?
Unexpected Push out of Covid Bubble
The aunty who does housekeeping took the day off. But mom already put clothes in the washing machine and the sink is full of dishes. She got ready for office and told me and Sunny to split the work. She did warn us that we will be ripped if we don't finish the work by the time she comes home for lunch. She ain't wrong because we do have a history of not doing the chores. I used the 'I have so much work today, you do it this time, next time I'll do for sure' card with Sunny and it didn't work. He took doing the dishes and I took drying the clothes. I connected my AirPods for music and was dancing in the balcony drying the clothes. 10 minutes later. Exactly when I was listening to The Show by Lenka where she sings "I'm just a little girl lost in the moment, I'm so scared but I don't show it" and swaying to the beat, the shirt I was drying on the wire, hit the AirPod on my left ear sending it flying. Someday, try getting out of your comfy zone and walk into the war zone. You will realize people living there holding onto this one emotion predominantly in every decision they make. FEAR.
The Magic of an Anecdote – a Homeless Friend
For a second, the world paused for me. A lot of times, sitting in the high rise buildings, taking multiple stakeholder meetings, looking at statistics, making policies for social welfare, often we go far away from the on-ground impact. Mere numbers don't always inspire us to do work around social welfare. It is the anecdotes that do the magic. These stories are extremely powerful in driving us. They deliver the message on how an entire army of people come together, design policies, provide medical facilities, to ensure the welfare of disadvantaged people. This is what gives us hope.

Grameen Bank – A Tool To Empower
This was a simple and local solution that worked. It empowered people to pursue their dreams. Be it establishing mills, doing farming, starting a small scale venture, the villagers of Jorba were able to live on their own and come out of poverty. This model was an inspiration to expand Grameen Banks to all over Bangladesh and to other parts of the world.
